# Subpanel Installation for EV in Toronto & Across the GTA: Dedicated Feeder Sizing, OESC Section 8 Load Calculation & Alternative to Full Panel Upgrade

Last updated: September 7, 2026

Best EV Charger Installation Toronto

[/ →](/)

installs dedicated subpanels for EV charging capacity across Toronto and the GTA for $1,500 to $2,800 CAD when your main panel is near capacity but has physical space for a new feeder breaker. OESC Section 8 load calculation determines feeder sizing, dedicated 240V branch circuit runs from the subpanel to the EV charger location, and ESA permit filing is standard. Subpanel balancer options considered where load distribution matters, and we always compare against a full 200A service upgrade so you get the lower-cost solution when the numbers work.

Our Master Electrician performs an OESC Section 8 load calculation to determine whether your service capacity supports a subpanel install (adding breaker slots without upgrading the utility service) or whether a full 100A to 200A service upgrade is required. Subpanels are installed with a dedicated feeder tap from the main panel, sized 60A to 100A depending on downstream load, using 6 AWG or 3 AWG copper feeders, and terminate in a Square D QO, Siemens, or Eaton subpanel enclosure with 12 to 24 breaker slots.

According to ESA and OESC Section 8 load calculation data, over 30% of GTA panel-upgrade quotes actually require only a dedicated subpanel install rather than a full service upgrade, saving homeowners $1,500 to $3,000 CAD when the utility service capacity is adequate but breaker slots are exhausted.

We install dedicated EV subpanels with lug-connected feeder tap or dedicated 100A subfeed throughout Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, including Toronto, North York, Etobicoke, Scarborough, East York, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Burlington, Milton, Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa, Newmarket, Aurora, and all surrounding communities across Peel, Halton, York, and Durham Regions. Every install includes ESA permit filing, OESC Section 8 load calculation, Certificate of Acceptance, and utility service coordination with Toronto Hydro, Alectra Utilities, Elexicon Energy, Oakville Hydro, Burlington Hydro, Milton Hydro, or Newmarket-Tay Power depending on your service address.

## What is a subpanel, and when do you need one?

If your main panel has spare service capacity but no breaker space, a dedicated subpanel is often the right, lower-cost fix. Our crew sizes the feeder, runs a load calculation, and installs the subpanel so your EV circuit has a clean home without a full panel upgrade. We file the ESA permit and schedule the inspection so everything is compliant.

A subpanel is a smaller distribution panel fed from your main panel by a single dedicated feeder. It provides new breaker spaces without touching your service size, your meter, or the utility. For a home that simply ran out of slots after years of added circuits, that is exactly the problem to solve.

The confusion that costs people money is treating “full panel” and “not enough service” as the same thing. They are not, and only a load calculation tells them apart.

## Breaker space or service capacity?

This is the entire decision, and it is worth understanding before anyone quotes you.

**Service capacity** is how many amps your home can draw in total, set by your service size, meter, and main breaker. Typically 100A or 200A in the GTA. **Breaker space** is how many physical slots the panel has left. They are completely independent, and a panel can be physically full while the service still has substantial headroom.

If the load calculation shows spare capacity and the only obstacle is slots, a subpanel at $1,500 to $2,800 CAD gives you the EV circuit and room for the next few projects. If the calculation shows the service itself is near its limit, a subpanel does not help, and the honest answers are an

EV load management device

[/load-management-system/ →](/load-management-system/)

 at $500 to $1,200 CAD or a

200A electrical panel upgrade

[/electrical-panel-upgrade/ →](/electrical-panel-upgrade/)

 at $2,500 to $4,500 CAD.

We run the OESC Section 8 calculation before quoting so that decision is made on numbers rather than on how crowded the panel door looks.

### Common problems we solve

- **Full panel, quoted a full upgrade** when a subpanel was the correct and cheaper fix.
- **Tandem and double-stuffed breakers** used to squeeze in circuits, often beyond what the panel is listed for.
- **Detached garages** with no power at all, or with a single lighting circuit borrowed from the house.
- **Failed inspections** from subpanels wired with bonded neutrals, a classic and easily avoided error.
- **Workshops and basement suites** that need their own distribution alongside the EV circuit.

## What does the install involve?

The subpanel is mounted, usually beside the main panel or at the load it serves. A feeder runs between them, sized from the load calculation with voltage drop checked on longer runs, protected by an appropriately rated breaker in the main panel.

Inside the subpanel, the neutral bar is isolated and the ground is separately bonded. That detail is not optional and it is the first thing an ESA inspector looks for. Your EV charger circuit is then landed on a double pole breaker, and the circuit directory is labelled properly inside the door.

For a detached garage, the same logic applies with a buried feeder in conduit, proper depth and backfill, and outdoor-rated terminations at both ends. We measure the run and price the trenching during the site inspection so nothing shifts on the day.

Then the ESA inspection, the Certificate of Acceptance, and a live charge session to confirm the circuit performs under real load.

## What does it cost across the GTA?

A subpanel beside the main panel runs $1,500 to $1,900 CAD. A remote subpanel with a feeder run across the house runs $1,900 to $2,800 CAD. A detached garage subpanel with buried feeder and trenching runs $2,800 to $4,200 CAD depending on distance and ground conditions.

All of those include the load calculation, the ESA permit, the inspection, and the Certificate of Acceptance. None of them require utility scheduling, which is why a subpanel job typically completes in a single day rather than the 1 to 2 weeks a

full 200A service upgrade

[/200-amp-service-upgrade/ →](/200-amp-service-upgrade/)

 takes.

We size the subpanel with spare spaces on purpose. A second charger, a heat pump circuit, or workshop power later should be a breaker, not another project.

## When a subpanel is the right fix for EV charging capacity

A dedicated subpanel is the right answer when your main panel has kW capacity but no physical breaker space for the new 60A double-pole an EV circuit needs. This is a common situation in Toronto homes that were re-panelled 15 to 20 years ago with just enough breakers for the loads at the time and have since added AC, an electric range, or a dryer that filled the spare positions.

The install works by tapping a new feeder off the main panel (a 60A or 100A double-pole breaker becomes the feeder protection) and running that feeder to a small subpanel mounted nearby, typically in the same mechanical room or the adjacent wall. The EV circuit then originates from a breaker in the subpanel. Bus bar rating on the subpanel matches the feeder rating; separate neutral and ground bars keep the subpanel isolated correctly.

Cost is $1,500 to $2,800 CAD installed, versus $2,500 to $4,500 CAD for a full panel upgrade. Timeline is a single day plus ESA inspection. No utility involvement required because the service size doesn’t change. The catch: it does not add total service kW, so if your load calculation is tight, a subpanel doesn’t fix that; only a service upgrade does.

## Subpanel vs full panel upgrade for an EV circuit

Two different problems, two different solutions.

Subpanel: main panel is full (no breaker spots) but the service can carry the EV load per the OESC Section 8 calculation. Add a subpanel from spare bus capacity, save $1,000 to $2,000 CAD versus a panel upgrade, keep the existing panel in service.

Full panel upgrade: OESC Section 8 calc exceeds the current service rating with the EV added, or the existing panel is discontinued/failing (Federal Pacific, Zinsco, split-bus) and needs replacement regardless. Replace the panel, add the EV breaker to the new panel bar directly.

Where both would technically work, the subpanel is cheaper. Where the existing panel is nearing end-of-life or was showing signs of overheating, arcing, or breaker failure at the time we inspected, the panel upgrade is worth doing now rather than adding a subpanel to a panel that will need replacement in 2 years anyway.

Our recommendation approach at the site inspection is to price both options where both apply and let you choose. Most Toronto homes with a 100A panel installed in 2005 to 2010 that just need one more circuit end up choosing the subpanel; homes with older or clearly-aging panels tend to go with the upgrade.

Why Us

## Why choose us for subpanel install?

### We tell you when this is the cheaper answer

A full panel with spare service capacity is a subpanel job. Quoting an upgrade instead is the most common overcharge we see.

### Feeder sized for the real load

Sized to the load calculation with voltage drop checked, not to whatever conductor was on the van.

### Neutral and ground separated properly

A subpanel needs isolated neutral and bonded ground. Getting that wrong is a classic failed inspection.

### Spare spaces left deliberately

We size the subpanel with room for the next circuit, whether that is a second charger, a heat pump, or a workshop.

### Detached garages handled

Buried feeder, conduit, trenching, and a garage subpanel scoped and priced before we break ground.

### Upgrade path preserved

If you later need a full 200A service, the subpanel and its circuits carry over rather than being ripped out.

Process

## How does subpanel install work?

Four clear steps, with the ESA permit and inspection built into every one of them.

01

### Capacity vs Space Check

We establish whether your problem is spare amperage or spare breaker slots. Those are different problems with very different prices.

02

### Feeder Sizing

The load calculation sets the subpanel size and feeder conductors, with voltage drop checked on longer runs.

03

### Install and Land

Subpanel mounted, feeder run and terminated, neutral and ground properly separated, EV circuit landed and labelled.

04

### Inspect and Certify

ESA inspection booked, Certificate of Acceptance handed over, charger commissioned and tested under load.

Buyer beware

## Common subpanel install mistakes to avoid

These are the four failure modes we see when a subpanel install is done poorly. Every one costs the homeowner more downstream, and every one is avoidable with proper preparation, code compliance, and a licensed crew.

1

### Loose or under-torqued feeder lugs

Feeder connections at the main panel and subpanel lugs must be torqued to the manufacturer spec (typically 250 to 275 inch-pounds for 3 AWG copper, 375 inch-pounds for larger). Crews that hand-tighten with a screwdriver create loose connections that heat under load, oxidize over five years, and eventually fail as an arc fault. The signature is a burning smell at the panel with no obvious source. Every proper subpanel install uses a calibrated torque wrench and marks each lug with torque paint.

2

### Incorrect neutral-ground bond in the subpanel

The neutral bar in a subpanel must be isolated from the ground bar (removed bonding screw or bonding strap). Crews that leave the bond in place (typical for main panels) create parallel current paths through the ground conductor, which shows up as ground-fault current on GFCI protection upstream. Every proper subpanel install verifies the neutral-ground isolation before energization.

3

### Feeder tap without upstream overcurrent protection

OESC Section 14 permits tap conductors under specific length and ampacity rules, but the tap must be protected by an overcurrent device rated for the tap conductor ampacity. Crews that tap the main panel bus without adding a fused disconnect create a code violation and a fire risk if the tap conductor is undersized for the main panel breaker rating. Every proper feeder tap install includes an appropriate OCPD at the tap point.

4

### Subpanel ampacity exceeds available main service capacity

A 100A subpanel fed from a 100A main service without any diversity calculation creates the assumption that both panels can draw full rated current simultaneously. OESC Section 8 requires a demand calculation that accounts for how the subpanel will actually be used before sizing. Skipping this step creates chronic main breaker trips when EV plus HVAC plus other loads coincide. Every proper subpanel install runs the load calc against total premises load, not just the subpanel scope.

FAQ

## Subpanel Install questions, answered

How much does a subpanel installation cost in Toronto?

A subpanel for an EV circuit runs $1,500 to $2,800 CAD, covering the panel, feeder, breakers, load calculation, ESA permit, and inspection. Detached garage subpanels with buried feeders and trenching run $2,800 to $4,200 CAD depending on the distance.

When is a subpanel better than a panel upgrade?

When your service has spare amperage but the main panel has no free breaker spaces. That is a very common situation in GTA homes that have had circuits added over the years. A subpanel solves it for roughly half the cost of a 100A to 200A upgrade, and there is no utility scheduling involved.

How do I know if I have capacity but no space?

The OESC Section 8 load calculation tells us. It totals your connected load, applies the code demand factors, and compares the result against your service size. If the number comes in comfortably below your service rating and the panel is simply physically full, a subpanel is the answer.

Does a subpanel need its own ESA permit?

Yes. Installing a subpanel and its feeder is permitted work in Ontario. We file the permit, book the inspection, and hand over the Certificate of Acceptance. That documentation also supports your Home Renovation Savings rebate claim.

Can a subpanel go in a detached garage?

Yes, and it is often the right approach. A buried feeder in conduit runs from the house to a subpanel in the garage, which then supplies the EV charger and any other garage circuits. We size the feeder for voltage drop over the distance and price the trenching upfront.

How long does a subpanel install take?

Most are a single day. Detached garage installs with trenching can run to two days depending on the ground conditions and the length of the run. There is no utility disconnect involved, so there is none of the 1 to 2 week wait a service upgrade brings.

Will a subpanel limit me later?

No, provided it is sized properly. We deliberately leave spare breaker spaces so you can add a second charger, a heat pump circuit, or workshop power later. And if you eventually need a full 200A service, the subpanel and everything on it carries straight over.

Is a subpanel as safe as a panel upgrade?

Yes, when installed correctly and within the load calculation. The important detail is that a subpanel requires an isolated neutral bar and a separately bonded ground, unlike a main panel. Getting that wrong is a common failed inspection, and it is one of the things the ESA inspector checks first.
