Do I need an EnerGuide evaluation to claim the Home Renovation Savings rebate?
Yes. HRS requires a pre-installation EnerGuide home energy evaluation and a post-installation follow-up evaluation. The evaluator confirms the eligible measure (Level 2 charger) is installed and captures the energy-efficiency delta for the file. Evaluations typically cost $600 to $800 CAD and the program reimburses a portion. We book both evaluations for you if you want.
Which chargers qualify for the 2026 Ontario EV rebates?
The charger must be ENERGY STAR certified (check the ENERGY STAR product finder) and installed by a licensed electrician under an ESA permit with a Certificate of Acceptance. Yes, they cover different things and do not conflict. Federal iZEV is a point-of-sale vehicle rebate up to $5,000 CAD from Transport Canada applied by your dealership. Ontario HRS is a charger-installation rebate up to $5,000 CAD administered by Enbridge Gas or Save on Energy after ESA sign-off. Both can apply to the same household in the same year.
What about time-of-use and Ultra-Low Overnight electricity rates?
The Ontario Energy Board Ultra-Low Overnight (ULO) rate charges roughly 2.4 cents per kWh from 11pm to 7am, which is when most home EV charging happens. What happens if my charger install does not have an ESA permit?
You cannot claim any of the rebates without the ESA Certificate of Acceptance. HRS, Enbridge, and Save on Energy all require it as proof the work was inspected and code-compliant.
